Clarinet Live CD |
Why this CDSince 1995, I have performed annual Mardi Gras concerts at the First Baptist Church of New London, Connecticut. This has been a win-win situation. The church provided the venue to perform Dixieland jazz, and the concerts provided a way for me to give something back to the church. Through the years I mostly performed with a quartet like you’ll hear on this recording, but three times I performed with a full Dixieland band. I was a member of this church for 20 years and its people influenced my life in immeasurable ways. I will be eternally grateful to everyone at the First Baptist Church. This CD is dedicated to you. The musicians who make up the quartet are friends and great jazz players. Drummer Tom Briggs and pianist Ian Frenkel recorded on my first CD. I couldn’t ask for any better players on these instruments. Bassist Mark McCormick is recording with the group for the first time, and he is superlative both in his playing and his positive attitude. This rhythm section afforded me the opportunity to perform tunes in the style of my idol, clarinet great Pete Fountain. Over the years I’ve collected over 60 of Pete’s LPs and CDs and listened to them constantly. I hope this CD presents a respectful tribute to his influence on my playing. For the selections on this Mardi Gras concert, I chose gems from 1914-1928. It’s been said, “They don’t write songs like they used to.” And it’s true. It amazes me that today musicians can record these old songs, and they still stand the test of time. Enjoy the music! |
